Pauley's Tavern and Pool Hall

Daydreams to cope with sometimes take on lives of their own....

al·le·go·ryˈ (aləˌgôrē) noun

plural noun: allegories

"A story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one."

“An Allegory is a form of extended metaphor in which objects, persons and actions in a narrative, are equated with meanings that lie outside the narrative itself.

The underlining meaning has moral, social, religious or political significance of abstract ideas as charity, greed and envy.

Thus an allegory is a story with two meanings, a literal meaning and a symbolic meaning.”

Yes, I looked it the f*ck up and with that you know what is needed to be known to understand what the Pauley’s Tavern and Pool Hall book series is about.

Oh I should add that the censor is pretty much off most of the time. PG this story is not. PG13 neither. R yes; but beyond that?

Shhh....

Now some background info on the place ”The R*tards" go to play.

(Pauley’s term of endearment for his patrons that don’t act their age, especially when sh*tfaced.

Think about what "r*tarded" means, then how it's used in every day language to be an insulting description.

Just like calling a child a "b*stard", some words should be questioned as too f*cked up to use like they're whatever.

"Wh***" is another one with an edge, and yes these words among others will be questioned, but you as readers decide the fate of these words as they apply to your personal vocabularies.)

Pauley’s Tavern and Pool Hall is a sort of 'speak-easy' name for The Iron Horseshoe Tavern established back in 1974 by Paul "Pauley" Kelly.

It’s called this to keep what are now known as 'hipster' invaders away, and its whereabouts only known by word of mouth.

Is it elitist?

Perhaps.

Or it is about self preservation and preventing as long as possible, their haven from being taken over by those that do not honor tradition, nor would uphold Pauley's Code of Conduct.

New folks are welcome, as long as they can respect the School House Rules and don't complain when Lucy gets unplugged; otherwise foos are getting their a*ses expelled!

Over the years The Tavern has become a home away from home club house for old timers and mostly blue collar roughneck man children with its latest motley generation currently in their 30’s, give or take.

Some married with children or divorced with visitation on the weekends.

They have bills to pay, money to save, jobs to not f*ck up in order to do both.

Occasionally these a*sholes may brawl and Pauley’s shotgun Grace taken out to dance, with Jukebox Lucy playing the soundtrack; but overall the place is mellow on a weekday afternoon.

The crowd that made The Tavern its watering hole is loyal and there is a sense of kinship between the boozer drunks.

Stories this tavern has no lack of thanks to the antics of the patrons, which also include my own.

   I wrote myself in as a character using my real name because all this stemmed from a daydream I had, to keep me company while I went for long walks with detours, in my new town of residence;

Boyle Heights, California.

Though home for me will always be my beloved

East Los Angeles, Califas

One day I thought of a man that didn’t exist to help me move on and let go of the past, by focusing on the existing hope of the present and lessons learned.

Perhaps it was my way to prepare myself mentally for the future because I don't have much to my name other than my imagination.

“Mikey, Jacob, Bobby, Joe, Paul, Davey, Alex, Dennis and Lou”

Names of made up men that are a close knit pack of pals I will never forget.

They all represent an aspect of the men I have known, both in the good and bad; but they are human, even if fictional.

They are part of the details to the symposium full of zanies.

This story experiment at times is a sort of open love letter to men that have shown their integrity even as they also try to get things right.

These men are strong but also weak.

Happy but still stressed.

Hopeful but discouraged at times with what they feel is out of their control.

It’s a mix we all endure, but with them; I feel how unequal men still are when it comes to expressing their feelings on it all.

How do I know?

I'm a daughter of one that expressed them regardless.

The women in this saga also are shown going through their own life roller coasters and attaining their triumphs for they too are strong and capable.

It’s just with them, the way their stories are told is different.

How different?

The goal is to show we could use a little bit of understanding from the fellas.

With their stories, I hope to tell men that not all of us are their enemies or psychos, that more often than not, there was an issue with communicating and emotions go on edge.

We can be worthy of trusting and also respecting.

I hope to tell, we can have our bad days too, even if our hairstyles look nice; and we don't always know what the f*ck we're doing either.

We do know we could be wrong also.

No really.

Women are capable of knowing they can be wrong. Getting us to admit it, now that's something else.

*cough*

I want to show the men I was able to reach through to, women can be their friends as well, and shoulder part of the old burdens that say a man must bare these alone.

Even as women, we can relate and be more than arm candy hood ornaments, "Honey can you bring me a beer?".

But this is to reassure the males that are willing to read, they'll have a place in what is usually considered female terrain.

Yes this is a quirky soap opera Spanglish novela, for a subculture of those that bought in to what a friend called:

"The Rockabilly Retirement Plan for Punks, Skins and Goths".

And what was surprising, the guys did get in to it as much as the gals. I mean, how can I write an open love letter to men, if I don't include what matters to and interests them?

From the serious like Erectile Dysfunction or even the car not starting and being already late for work.

To the "Are you f*cking serious!?!" and the latter said in two manners.

One with enthusiastic glee like they scored, and the other in BOHICA despair.

Espeakin' of which....

This is a bedtime story dedicated most of all to Our Troops and 'Docs' green side or civilian; for I do know the power of a reality break, if not reading oneself asleep.

And this because I want to "Play It Forward" and yes I do mean play.

The man I would spend countless silent moments, wondering about his happiness and safety; he was the life lesson I needed to get me out of a bad place; even as I felt helpless knowing which bad place he was headed back to.

This Army Coptor Doctor ridding one of Anansi's spiderweb threads, tied to the foot of a Dragonfly Dustoff back in Stan; reminded me why being able to control your focus, makes dealing with difficult things, easier to cope with.

The chaos will still be there, it's how you allow it to affect you, that makes a very important difference.

You either learn how to hold on and fight or you don't. That "don't" had been my concern for him.

There was a reason his story began to stand out to me.

"Yet for me that also came from the desert, compassion I also knew how to show...."

Eyes like his and lack of smile, you don't forget.

He had the face of many that aren't returning all that well; but his face comforted me when it would look silly; but haunted when it was a stoic with unintended, resigned grace.

So this allegory that aims to be a cult classic, does have its soul, as that odd daydream of mine, found a life of its own.

And it became a Shoretale Fable of Therapy in Motion and thinking up the answers that become the solutions.

It's all just rhyming for the reasons, that carry us through the seasons of change.

Suggestion: Look up Grandiose, Ostentatious, Pretentious, Narcissistic, Delusional, Self Absorbed Motor Mouth, but most of all Ironic Catharsis. Thank you.

"Hey you!"

"Man does it sound good to hear your voice. Thought of you all day."

"You did?"

"Yes. I'm quite smitten with you kitten."

"Awww...."

"So how was your day?"

"I blogged my therapy. And yours?"

"Loooong and boren! I kept telling myself just a little longer before I can clock out and make my way out to see you."

"You're doing it again."

"What am I doin'?"

"Making me feel special."

"You are but not like my friends that need crash helmets."

"How are they doing?"

"Good. How's Annie and Susan?"

"Good. How's your parents and siblings?"

"Good. How are yours?"

"Good."

"Well that's good. So Bullets feel like going for a cruise?"

"Sure if you feel you're rested. How long do I have?"

"Give me an hour."

"Okies. Where are we cruising to?"

"Don't matter as long as you're riding shotgun."

"Well I reckon then we're headin' somewhere. Then what are we doing?"

"Want to grab a bite to eat?"

"We could but we've eaten out a lot and you should save your money."

"I'm just gonna spend it on you in another way. But if this is leading to cooking at your place and watching a movie, I'm game to wash dishes tonight."

"What would you be in the mood to eat?"

"What are you in the mood to make?"

"What's the budget?"

"Uhm, $20!"

"Oh wow, okies that includes drinks."

"No it don't. Maybe for you but I'd like a beer or six."

"If you drink six beers you'll end up sleeping over and waking up early to get home so you could change and go to work."

"I could sleep in longer if I get ready at your place."

"True. Okies so we're staying in and cooking, watching a movie; you drinking then sleeping over snuggled in a twin bed for a little while longer?"

"If you don't mind."

"I don't mind. So I guess you need more time to get your things ready?"

"Not a lot more. Alright Bullets I'll let you go. Think up of what to make!"

"I'm thinkin', I'm thinkin'. See you later alligator."

"In a while crocodile. Bye."

"Bye." (click)

We hang up and Mikey springs out of bed knowing he's getting to see me and we'll be cooking something homemade, plus he'll be drinking beer and we'll be snug like two bugs under the covers of my twin bed. He's begun to look forward to snuggling and spooning, besides smoochin' all close and tender.

He gathers his clothes in his overnight bag along with his carrying case holding his toiletries. He looks through his DVD's for something to watch. Nothing stood out, besides he's not done going through my DVD binder to watch what I have in my collection.

He's ready to go out the front door when he hears Dennis call out his name from the kitchen. He closes the front door, puts his overnight bag on the couch and keys back in his pocket. He walks over to the kitchen to see Dennis and Alex eating KFC.

"What's up?"

"Come grub with us."

"I'm actually on my way to see Gina and we're gonna stay in and cook, and then watch a movie."

"Didn't you do that last week?"

"Yeah and?"

"Mikey you're spending a lot of time with Gina and we hardly see you anymore. You've missed poker night twice in a row already man."

"And unless you've kept your mouth shut to keep us guessing, you're still not doin' the deed to even make us feel like you getting some on a regular basis is worth it; but all you've done is get stranded at 2nd for how long now?"

"Dennis I am not complaining but you obviously are. It doesn't always have to be about s*x dude. I really like her. We have this connection and bond forming I haven't known since Rachel, and it's a whole lot kinder. She's not rushing me to commit, if anything it's getting her to the point she'd be my girlfriend. Once that's sealed I can hang out more."

"Listen to yourself Mikey! What's with this need to have her be the girlfriend before you spend time with us? With how much time she's used to seeing you, she's gonna b*tch you out for spending time with us after and not her!"

"She's not like that."

"Is it because you don't like us anymore and her company replaced ours?"

"Alex you sounded b*tthurt. She hasn't replaced you guys."

"Yet."

"Dennis not funny."

"Dude you are so p*ssy whipped without actually have gotten to see it, it's frustrating! You obviously are already in love and you left us behind."

"I didn't leave you guys behind."

"Then prove it."

"How?"

"Cancel your date with her, eat here and then we all go to Pauley's."

"I can't cancel on her with dinner plans. She's probably waiting for me to get there so we can eat together."

"I told you Alex. Mikey's gone done abandoned us for a skirt!"

"She doesn't wear skirts. He left us for a tomboy with boxer arms. So petite and feminine."

"Alex that wasn't cool. She does dress feminine. She's just not high maintenance when she is and I like that. And I like she's tough looking. I thought you r*tards would appreciate that she's more like Frankie than a Marie."

"With a Marie you'd have gotten l*id by now."

"I'm gonna get l*id but by my girlfriend when she's ready, Jeezus!"

"Mikey for the sake of The Bro Code, give the boyfriend act a rest for tonight and spend time with us. We miss you."

"Yeah Mikey, it's not the same hanging out there without you to make fun of."

"Oh yeah, wonderful logic you're using to get me to go."

"Call Mrs. Future Mikey Duncan to tell her plans changed and you'll make it up to her."

"Alex I'm not breaking plans, I've been thinking of her all day and want to crash over now that she's cool with it."

"You got work tomorrow."

"I'm getting ready at her place."

They both look at Mikey knowing very clearly what that means while he looks back at them as if he's clueless.

"You're moving yourself in. Did she give you a drawer?"

"What?"

"Mikey you heard Dennis, answer the man!"

"No."

"You haven't left behind a toothbrush?"

"No."

Alex and Dennis look at each other and it was telepathic as they took in their boy Mikey's response along with their intuitions.

"Mikey don't move in to her apartment. It's only been 3 months of not even doing it!"

"Dennis I'm not moving in!"

"Have you left behind anything?"

"A t-shirt and book I let her borrow."

Dennis face palms while Alex shakes his head and drops his extra crispy drumstick down on his plate.

"A book? Are you for real?"

"What's wrong with that!?!"

"A guy does not lend out his books to just anyone, ESPECIALLY a chick he's been dating that's not a full fledged girlfriend yet! Books aren't like CD's or DVD's you have better odds of replacing than a book you made a point to own. It's not even like loaning out a skin mag you have no expectations won't get man handled. You loan out something of substance, YOUR substance! That's the kind of sh*t that gets you taken serious based on what kind of book it is. So what kind was it?"

"A photo book of beer advertisements."

Alex and Dennis both drop their jaws and gawk at Mikey just keep making it worse for himself.

"Duuuude!"

"What? She likes vintage too and likes beer even if she doesn't drink it often!"

"That's not a book to lend a chick not committed to you! I don't even remember me getting to see it!"

"Wait. MOTHERF*CKER IT'S NOT THE ONE I GAVE YOU FOR CHRISTMAS IS IT!?!"

"Yeeeeah....She's respectful of other people's books!"

"I can't believe you loan her that one! Whatevs. Which t-shirt of yours is at her place?"

"An easy to replace Social D logo."

That seemed to calm his roommates down.

"So you gonna take a break tonight so you can hang out with us for once?"

Mikey thinks about it because he already has a toothbrush over at my place and he was eyeing my drawers when I showed him I am more organized than what I come off sometimes.

"Fine a**holes, I'll cancel but if I'm going to make it up to her, it will be a while before you see me again."

"Bro that's cold. Grab a plate, we brought you your own mac and cheese."

"Nice. I'll be right back so I can call her."

"You can't call her in front of us?"

"Don't push your luck. I'm giving up a hot, fresh home cooked meal and making out to spend time with you d*cks."

"See you missed us too, admit it!"

"It's not like I went out to replace you guys, I just met a kitten I like a lot that likes me and she's good, mellow company. You got to give me that at least I'm dating someone that would enjoy reading a collector's book over another Chrystal that had only the Yellow Pages her cat shreds in her house while it was fashion and celebrity gossip magazines the rest of the time."

"True. She better return the book I gave you. Made me think of you when I found it f*cker!"

"She will. I'm gonna go call her."

Dennis and Alex smile content they aren't chump change tonight, and their reasoning isn't completely selfish. Mikey has been spending a lot of time with me to the point it's becoming most of his free time. Poker night you don't miss two weeks in a row and not expect to hear jeers. It's traditional male bonding time.

But in all fairness, they bond at Pauley's too where there's either the cool tough chicks like Frankie, the matrons like Lorraine, Josie to annoy and the Maries that after being passed around, isn't all that pretty knowing how much and with how many she likes to play with.

(Phone Ringing-Calling Gina Pic Chik)

"Hey Mikey, you stuck in traffic?"

"Bullets I know we talked about staying in and cooking, watching a movie and cuddling but I'm getting hounded to hang out with the R*tards. They practically read me the riot act. I'm sorry baby but can we reschedule if it's cool? If it's not I'll just tell them I made plans with you first and they can see me another time."

"When will that be?"

"When I'm not with you."

"Michael."

"You're being formal Lizett."

"If the guys hounded it's probably because you've been really MIA and they're wondering if you're ever coming back."

"That's what they went on about. So it's cool if we break plans?"

"Yeah, we can hang out another day."

"How about after I spend a few hours with the guys to hush them up? We can go to IHOP so we don't have to cook."

"There's gonna be a time you wish they wouldn't be hushed with you if you set yourself up with that Murphy's."

"True. Murphy I take it back! I take it back! I take it back! So can I see you after I spend time with them at Pauley's?"

"You don't want to go with them to Denny's as your after Pauley's thing?"

"Not really. IHOP & U is cooler."

"Well I was looking forward to seeing you and I'm not hungry right now. But are you sure you can get away early enough to enjoy a meal and still get enough sleep before you have to get ready?"

"Yeah. They said I can make it up to you so taking you to IHOP for dreakfast is it."

"They may have meant on another day."

"Midnight turns in to another day."

"Ay Mikey. You're pretty set on seeing me tonight. Okies, I'll take a nap if I can and if I knock out but wake up when you call, then we can hang out but they're gonna want you to drink with them more than a few beers."

"Gina, I really don't like the position my friends are putting me in. I want to see you and they're trippin' I'm not giving them enough attention because I spend most of my free time with you."

"Mikey how about looking at it like this? Whether it's to me or someone else, if you were getting hitched again, you'd want them to be your groomsmen right?"

He's quiet. It's true, but in his mind he still feels he needs me to feel secure as his mate before he spends more time again with his buddies. It's not completely flawed reasoning but it is gambling with a set up where even the cool, chill types can get uppity if they've grown accustomed to things being a certain way.

He's also taking in I mentioned him getting hitched again. He wants to, but he also wants to be careful picking with who. Am I opening up more to the idea of making me the 'gf' first before he can relax with chasing me and can take a balanced break from me?

"You're right. But I'm sticking with IHOP & U is cooler. Take your nap and I'll call later so we can get our pancake fix on."

"Fine. Your friends I can feel resenting me already."

"They're just whining, I show up, drink a couple of rounds and then I'm off the hook and could go back to what I've been wanting to do all day and see you finally."

"But you seen me Sunday and it's only Wednesday."

"You gonna start in with me too? Is it a crime to want to spend time with you over my friends that had me a long run since my last relationship?"

{"Since my last relationship?" BREATHE!}

"It's not a crime, but neglecting your friends is if you want them to still welcome you in to their lives. Hang out. If we can we do. If we can't we don't. Talk with you later handsome."

"Talk with you soon beautiful. Bye."

"Bye." (click)

We hang up and Mikey sighs. He returns to the kitchen to eat his mac n' cheese.

"So is she p*ssed at us?"

Mikey answers Alex "Not at all, but I'm taking her to IHOP after I drink a couple of rounds."

"You aren't going to Denny's with us after?"

"Hey, I changed plans with my girl to hang out with you after wanting to see her all day! I'm taking her out to dreakfast, end of discussion!"

"Your girl? Mikey you ain't boyfriend and girlfriend! Stop acting like you are!"

"Alex I'm going to act like one when it's official which isn't much longer!"

"Mikey seriously, what is up with you and Gina? You're not an item but you're acting like you are but say you got to convince her to make it official. It's been how long now and all you've done is make out and cuddle? And you're decided you'll be this when you have s*x after she's ready. Mikey what if the s*x s*cks?"

"Don't jinx me f*cker! It's been really h*t convincing her which is why I think about seeing her all day. You may think getting stranded at 2nd this long is torture but I really get to pl*y with them, like I could have been while she was cooking at the stove and I was pr*ssed up behind her gr*pping handfuls. She would even wear her apron t*pless underneath. She lets me r*b her c*rves, and she's become more r*sponsive. H*ll, just thinking about it is t*rning me on."

"She's worn her apron with n* top underneath and she lets you r*b the girls while also the rest of her c*rves, while she's cooking?"

"You should see her in this really broken in vintage cobbler apron that looks like a babydoll dress on her. She's worn her jean shorts underneath that are covered by the hem; and when she's like that barefoot and she lets her hair down, I've k*ssed her legs all over and when her n*pples got h*rd it showed through the thin fabric. She's let me gently b*te them over the fabric.

Duuuudes, last time she was dressed like this she gave me a l*p dance where he was really making c*ntact with my j*ck with her a** while she *rched her back! Even if tonight wasn't the night either, I had the green light to s*ck on her t*tties til I knocked out. You can't blame me for looking forward to that, can you?"

"She gave you a l*p dance wearing her apron t*pless and really r*bbed her a** in to your j*ck while she *rched her back?"

"Yup. For not being a str*pper, she gives some fine a** l*p dances. D*mn Gina, WOW!"

"She's given you more than one l*p dance?"

"YES! I p*tch major tent each time and have to r*b myself out in her bathroom so I don't get blue b*lls. And I know we're getting closer to going all the way when she was k*ssing my *nner legs with my jeans on while I was sitting on my hands."

"She k*ssed your stuff with your jeans on?"

"Just my *nner legs but she r*bbed her b*st all over it. I so know she's gonna let me t*tty f*ck her where I finally get to see her duck face before we 6*."

"I totally pictured that. I feel bad now whining you chill with us tonight."

"Well Dennis I can still call her back and drive to Boyle Heights to see her and f*ol around before taking her to IHOP for dreakfast."

"I thought you were going to cook dinner?"

"I'm too h*rny now to let her focus on cooking. Actually, I'm too h*rny to focus on eating now! THANKS A LOT A**HOLES!!!"

He debates it. If he lays his hand on little Mikey just to pacify the f*cker, he's gonna need to take his time because there's a lot in his sp*nk bank from the times we crossed over from platonic to preliminary l*vers of sorts.

He wants to take his time to savor each second picturing my b*re br*asts and him k*ssing, l*cking, s*cking on them, then imagining his jeans off and him b*re to me with his j*hnson between and sh*ved together. Then there's the time to be in *fterglow after b*sting a large l*ad from how much he wants me but can't have me.

"I'm going to roll over and sleep if I do, especially after eating comfort food. So two rounds d*cks and then I'm gone!"

"Aw Mikey that's bullsh*t! Don't rush through drinking with us! You can tell the guys what you just told us about the apron, and they'll chill while you get yours. But as soon as you two are official, we get visitation without her."

"Fine. At least you're finally seeing it's not for nothing. She's a cool kitten and we like each other, so excuse me for wanting to spend time with her bonding. She listens to me talk about what I can't with you guys."

"What can't you talk to us about?" Alex asks while Dennis knows.

"Stuff."

"Wait a minute! You could tell us about getting k*nky in the kitchen with her apron but you can't tell us what you talk about that you claim you can't tell us; what the f*ck is up with that!?!"

"Alex I don't want to talk about it now. I'll tell you when I'm ready but I've felt hope again in a way I thought I've forgotten how. Please don't ever resent her for listening to me vent and caring about me being happy and content. She's a good person with a good heart that I can admit, I really want to get to know her for more than a close friendship. I'm seeing long term potential if she doesn't spook more."

Alex looks at Mikey as he chews his food and takes in there's something I know he doesn't besides was loaned a cool book he had not seen before me. The part of long term potential resonated. His buddy is basically saying he's in love with a woman he hasn't had s*x with yet, that has already spooked before.

He knows Mikey wears his heart on his sleeve when he really liked the girlfriends and it ended; though with Chrystal it was clear it was some twisted psychology that kept them together and made him withdraw after. She was his fiancee after all.

How this will play out he wonders but there's psychology involved in my connection with his friend that is keeping secrets. Yeah the physical he tells them just about all, but other than Dennis, the guys are oblivious from letting their guards down with their suicidal friend with a broken heart. Now Alex is on guard because he's concerned he'll find too much comfort with me, he'll get addicted to me and the codependent tendencies come back out.

"Mikey be careful getting attached to hope with a chick with a history of spooking."

"Gotcha. So we're meeting up at Pauley's and before it gets too late I leave to m*keout with Gina. Sounds like a plan!"

Dennis and Alex look at each other, shrug their shoulders and return to their fried chicken meal. Mikey rushes through eating wanting to get to the tavern for a cameo and then make his way to see me and hopefully around. It hasn't occurred to him that if he wants to appease his friends that will get him drunk so he can't drive anywhere, if he does manage to get to me, he'll be lit wanting to f*ol around since it's already on his mind. He's not seeing he's setting up a drunken b*oty call that can throw it all away out the window.

"Mikey if you're trying to get her to commit, don't try to h*ok up while drunk. It's gonna offend her."

Mikey thinks about the good point Dennis made. The more he thinks about it, the pre-buzzkill it becomes. He really doesn't like his friends right now.

"I'm not going to try to h*ok up like that dude!"

"Mikey we know you. You're too in to her and you're not seeing what we are!" Alex being adamant about it.

"What are you seeing I'm not?"

"She's not as in to you as you are in to her, otherwise she would have g*ven it up by now and you two official, so we can at least f*cking see you, dude!"

"Hey, she wants special and I respect that will be me when she's ready!"

"You make it sound like a sure thing Mikey! She's just a c*ck t*ase so chill with the making it official!"

"Well she's t*asing it well so far I'm not complaining, so maybe it's you that's gotta chill Alex. You don't know about why she needs to take it slow, okay; so shoosh it please so I can finish my KFC I gave up a hot, fresh, homemade meal with my future girl for you guys?!"

"What is it I don't know then?"
